What is Urban and Regional Planning?

The planning profession is a comprehensive discipline that develops creative solutions on issues such as land use, transformation of physical structure, social relations and transport etc. in a very wide area from regional scale to spatial design scale. Due to this structure, it collaborates with different disciplines such as urban economics, urban history, architecture, landscape architecture, public administration, geological and geodetic engineering, environmental engineering and geography. Urban and Regional Planning Department education consists of theoretical courses and studio/project studies.


The aim of the department is to educate BTU URP graduates as individuals who have analytical thinking, have the ability to use technology in the best way, have analytical thinking, have analytical thinking, work in line with basic urbanism principles such as sustainability, protection of historical and cultural heritage, equal use of existing resources by all segments of society and public interest, have planning and design skills, can use technology in the best way, can work in teams, are leaders, sensitive to the problems of cities and regions, competent and influential in their fields.


Graduates of URP can work in many different institutions in the public and private sectors. Among public organizations, they can find jobs in the Ministry of Development, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Prime Ministry Mass Housing Administration, Ministry of European Union, Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, State Hydraulic Works, Development Agencies, Turkish Statistical Institute, Special Environmental Protection Directorates, special provincial administrations and municipalities. In the private sector, graduates can find jobs in urban planning and architecture offices, real estate appraisal firms, advertising and graphic design companies as well as companies providing transport and infrastructure services.
